Back in November we had the pleasure of hosting students from Shepherds College, “the country’s leading three-year post-secondary educational program for students with intellectual disabilities,” in our store. Five culinary students along with their teacher and teacher’s assistant joined us for an afternoon of fun and learning. We started off with a scavenger hunt for the students so they could see the store and and the breadth of products we carry. Each student was to check off the list of items as they found them and then bring one item back to our meeting space with them.
Once everyone had completed their search and met back in our meeting space Rick, who has owned and operated several restaurants before joining us, reviewed the items that the students brought back and the importance of each one in the kitchen.
Rick also reviewed interview skills with the students and held a mock interview, putting the teaching assistant in the hot seat. Rick has hired over 400 restaurant employees in the past and had a lot of great tips and tricks to share with the students.
We thoroughly enjoyed having these culinary students spend the afternoon with us and can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.
